Artificial Intelligence as Collective Shadow: A Transpersonal Perspective

Abstract

The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has once again prompted questions about consciousness, spirituality, and ethics. AI is, in fact, not neutral and reflects the values, assumptions, and blind spots of the societies that create it. Drawing on transpersonal psychology, this paper explores AI as an expression of the collective shadow, shaped by unexamined biases, power dynamics, and patterns of disconnection. Using perspectives from Jung, psychosynthesis, and transpersonal theory, it examines how AI can both reveal and reinforce collective shadow material, especially in terms of inequality, external validation, and ethical responsibility. While AI may support reflection and access, it cannot replace embodied human connection or authentic spiritual growth. A transpersonal lens highlights the need for ethical awareness, embodiment, and inner responsibility in shaping AI, suggesting that meaningful technological progress depends on integrating psychological, cultural, and spiritual values rather than separating them.
