“They See Dead People”: Working with Psychics and Mediums in Spontaneous-Case Investigations

Abstract

This paper examines the underexplored role of psychics and mediums in spontaneous-case investigations of apparitions, hauntings, and related phenomena, drawing on over four decades of fieldwork with several experienced practitioners from the United States and Japan. Distinctions are made between mediums, psychics, and psychic mediums, and between conscious apparitions and non-conscious place-memory or residual hauntings, with attention to how practitioners’ conceptual frameworks, investigative attitudes, and communication styles affect both case assessment and outcome. Through detailed case vignettes from locations such as the Moss Beach Distillery, the Banta Inn, the USS Hornet, and private residences, the paper illustrates how select psychic mediums contribute to: (a) differentiation between normal and ostensibly paranormal events; (b) detection of misperception and fraud; (c) characterization and partial verification of ostensible discarnate entities; and (d) pragmatic resolution of client-centered concerns. Across cases, the most valuable practitioners are shown to be those who integrate critical thinking with psi perceptions, accept questioning and uncertainty, recognize nonparanormal explanations, and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and flexible, “diplomatic” engagement with both clients and purported entities. The paper concludes by proposing practical criteria for selecting and working with psychic practitioners in field investigations, arguing that, when appropriately supervised and embedded in sound investigative protocols, the “right” psychic mediums can function as useful detectors, interpreters, and mediators, often expediting both phenomenological clarification and psychosocial resolution for the living while potentially enriching the evidential picture of survival-related claims.
